I was first introduced to the idea of grounding or “earthing” back in 2008. The idea of grounding to the earth sounds good in theory but it’s pretty complex. If you do it wrong, it could have negative impacts on your sleep and your health.
In general and if done correctly earth grounding bed sheets can be a real game changer for improving all phases of sleep. I’ve heard people say their insomnia is now gone. They fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and wake up refreshed.
But like I said using earth grounding bed sheets isn’t as easy as just purchasing them, putting them on your bed and being able to cure your insomnia.
There’s quite a bit of nuance and understanding that has to take place first.
Check out some of these terms that all have to do with the physics of electrons, electricity and voltage.
electromagnetic fields, dirty electricity, grounding, bioelectrical stress, static electricity, electrosmog, radiofrequency radiation, power line communication, antenna effect, EMF interference, electrical insulation, earthing, capacitive coupling, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), stray voltage, electrostatic discharge, circuit integrity, grounding rods, electrical wiring standards, transformer grounding, electrical noise, frequency modulation, signal interference, transient voltage, power frequency, radiated emissions, harmonic distortion.
As you can see there’s a lot of terminology and understanding that must be reached in order to work with electricity correctly so that it’s healing to the body. In most cases it is but I do want to highlight a couple things to make note of when using earth grounding bed sheets in your bedroom.
A while back I wrote an entire piece about grounded bed sheets and if they really work or not. I do use them, believe in them, recommend them but only if you’re using them correctly.
Before we talk about some things to look out for when it comes to using earth grounding bed sheets, let’s talk about the overall health and sleep benefits of simply grounding to the earth.
First, What is Grounding?
Grounding, you also may know it as earthing, refers to the practice of making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface or using products designed to connect the body to the Earth’s electrical field, with the aim of neutralizing electrical stress and improving well-being.
“Earthing is the future. Humanity needs to reconnect to the planet, to our natural electrical state, and to our natural state of good health. Our research shows that the Earth’s natural electric charge stabilizes the physiology at the deepest levels, reducing inflammation, pain, and stress while improving blood flow, energy, and sleep.” – Clint Ober
Benefits of Grounding
Remember when you were a child? You were running around barefoot all day? Playing in the grass or on the sand with no shoes on? I played for hours outside with no shoes as a child. It always felt so good but I didn’t know why. I just remember having endless energy….all the time. I probably drove my parents crazy. 😉 Sure some of that energy was because I was a child and naturally children have more energy than adults but some of it has to do with being grounded, being outside and being connected to nature.
When human skin (particularly the bottom of your feet that contain sweat glands) physically touches the surface of the earth (sand, dirt, rocks, grass etc) there’s a transfer of electrons that happens. We’ve already seen research showing how beneficial grounding is but this flood of electrons helps your body in so many ways.
First it increases your redox potential. Redox is just a fancy term for reduction of oxidation. That is the body’s ability to heal faster from oxidative stress. In order to do this your body needs antioxidants to carry out that job. Antioxidants donate electrons to molecules that have lost electrons and are “unstable” causing a cascade of inflammation throughout your glands, organs and tissues. This connection to the Earth’s electrical field stabilizes your autonomic nervous system, which controls your bodily functions like heart rate and digestion, promoting a state of calm and relaxation.
Where does the body get more electrons?
From the earth by grounding.
When was the last time you spent time outside without sunglasses on and grounded to the earth?
Here’s a list of some of the many health benefits of grounding.
- Reduced Inflammation: Decreases inflammation by neutralizing free radicals.
- Improved Sleep: Enhances your sleep quality by normalizing cortisol levels.
- Lowered Stress Levels: Stabilizes your autonomic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety.
- Pain Relief: Alleviates chronic pain, especially in your muscles and joints.
- Better Circulation: Improves your blood flow, which supports heart health and boosts energy levels.
- Enhanced Recovery: Speeds up your recovery from injuries or physical exertion by reducing inflammation.
- Protection from EMFs: Reduces your body’s exposure to harmful electromagnetic fields.
- Immune System Support: Enhances immune response by improving cellular function.
- Balanced Hormones: Helps regulate hormone levels, particularly cortisol, contributing to reduced stress.
- Overall Well-being: Promotes a general sense of well-being and connection to the natural world.
“Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, but it also contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.” – Florence Williams
Dangers of nnEMF
I’ve been involved in natural health and alternative healing since 2003 so I’m well aware of the dangers of smart meters, cell phone towers, dirty electricity, wireless routers, electric vehicles and even cell phones. But sometimes I forget that most people don’t even know that these things post a danger to our health.
The more time you spend connected to your devices, the sicker you’re going to be. You’ll notice more issues sleeping, atrial fibrillation, heart attacks and even cancer.
Conversely the more time you spend in nature, the healthier you’ll be. If you cannot take your shoes off and ground at least consider sleeping on earth grounding bed sheets. What I love about this is that it’s “similar” to being outside.
The more time we spend outside the faster we heal. Think about how much time you spent outside as child vs an adult. It’s pretty shocking to think about how we spend 90% of our life indoors. By sleeping on earth grounding bed sheets, you’re spending 8 hours a day connected to nature.
How do you think that’s going to help you over the course of one year? How about five years?
Getting back to the dangers of nnEMF (non native electromagnetic fields)
- Increased Cancer Risk
- Wi-Fi and Health
- DNA Damage and Gene Expression Changes
- Neurobehavioral Effects
- Cardiovascular Effects
- Reproductive Effects
- Oxidative Stress
- Sleep Disturbances
- Developmental Effects
- Increased Aggression and Learning Issues
If you are having sleep issues there could be an electrical component. Perhaps you have dirty electricity in your walls, stray voltage or even wifi on in your home. Seriously consider fixing those issues as part of your overall strategy to improve your sleep.
“Grounding, or connecting with the Earth’s energy, is a simple, yet powerful method to combat chronic pain, inflammation, and stress.” – Stephen Sinatra, M.D.
What To Be Aware of With Grounding Bed Sheets
Avoid The Third Prong
If your home was built before 1960 it’s possible the outlets have been upgraded to have 3 prongs but it was never a part of the original wiring of your home. Essentially it could mean that yes the third prong is there but it isn’t actually grounded.
There are other issues like mismatched wiring with the third prong. In this case the ground and neutral wires were reversed. If that’s the case you could get an electrical shock by using the third prong.
Only Ground with Rod To Earth
I only recommend using the grounding rod in the earth to ground your bed. I never recommend using the third prong. I don’t trust the electrician who did the wiring of your home. You’re literally putting your health in the hands of a complete stranger who did the work decades ago.
Moist Ground
As we all know water helps to conduct electricity. Every few nights I recommend to pour out a pitcher of water over the dirt where your grounding rod is. It’s especially important to do during the Summer months because it obviously rains less.
I usually just use my hose to water it down ever few days.
Turn off Electrical Devices
If you’re able to unplug any devices that are near your bed that would be idea. All wires (unless properly insulated) will emit a magnetic and electric field about 6 feet from their location. If you have a lamp plugged in next to your bed, unplug it before you go to sleep. If you have a wifi router, unplug it before bed.
Some people will go so far as to have an electrician wire a wall switch that shuts off all electricity flowing in the four walls of their bedroom. People report sleeping much deeper and even curing their insomnia with this one trick alone.
When using earth grounding bed sheets you need to be mindful of all the electronic devices you have in your bedroom so they don’t try to use use as a conduit to find ground.
Lightning Storms
During Winter I find myself unplugging the wire that connects to my earth grounding bed sheet. I don’t take out the grounding rod, I’ll leave that there. I’ll just unplug it from the corner of the grounded bed sheet.
The last thing I want is for a lightning storm to happen and I get electrocuted while sleeping.
Not fun.
Consider Dirty Electricity & Shielding
When you’re sleeping on earth grounding bed sheets with lots of electronics plugged in, in your bedroom this could pose an issue with regard to oxidative stress. If you have outlets near your bed, consider shielding them with Greenwave Dirty Electricity filters. If you have a smart meter on the outside of your bedroom wall, consider getting some Y-Shield EMF Paint to block those frequencies from entering your bedroom and using you as a conduit to get to ground.
“Time in nature is not leisure time; it’s an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” – Richard Louv
Conclusion
So the question remains, are earth grounding bedsheets harming your sleep? Most likely not but you’ll want to consider the points mentioned herein to better optimize their use. I’m a big fan of grounding during the day and while sleeping. If you have an Oura Ring or Whoop Band you can test out your sleep scores over 30 days to see how these grounded bed sheets help with your sleep scores!
