Synthetic sleeping tablets sold over the counter are toxic and dangerous for your liver (which has over 500 functions). If a molecule isn’t found in nature, your body will not recognize it and consider it a foreign object inside your body.
Do you know how your body treats any foreign object?
Like an enemy…. so it mounts an immune response (which further depletes your energy which you need to prevent sickness).
If you have insomnia or any other sleep condition you may be tempted like I used to be to purchase some sleeping tablets online.
It’s part of our culture.
We have some kind of symptom and we want to pop a pill for it and continue our toxic living until we die from it. That’s where the phrase “a pill for every ill” came from.
The thing you want to realize when taking an over the counter sleeping tablet (that’s synthetic) is that they can artificially lower and arbitrary number but not cure the actual disease. This is why for example that statin drugs can lower a number (while people not realizing that the number isn’t a disease….the number was made up) but not prevent the person from having a heart attack.
Drugs will get rid of symptoms (for a while, until your liver gets used to them) but never actually fix the cause.
So before you purchase some sleeping tablets online, just realize that nobody ever had a pharmaceutical drug deficiency in their body that a drug corrected.
With that said, there are some “natural” sleeping tablets online that may help with insomnia and other sleep issues you may be having. But even with natural molecules that your body recognizes we’re still taking a very Western approach to healing.
The 3 natural sleeping tablets I recommend are melatonin, magnesium bisglycinate and L-theonine.
But before you go purchasing them, ask yourself this question…”at any point in my life, did I ever have a good sleep without taking a sleeping tablet?”
If the answer is yes (that is you have had one night of great sleep without a supplement or a drug) to that question then these sleeping pills I’m going to recommend will not “cure” your insomnia naturally.
In order to do that, you need to completely change your environment, habits, diet, lifestyle and possibly consider doing a parasite cleanse, heavy metal cleanse and a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) test to find out how your body is digesting nutrients.
With that said, I consider the 3 natural sleeping tablets below to be good crutches that can sustain you WHILE you’re doing the hard work of resetting your circadian rhythm (which is at the heart of EVERY sleep issue).
So let’s get started….
Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone that’s naturally made in your pineal gland upon exposure to light. This is why I recommend watching the sunrise every single morning to set your circadian rhythm for the day. A few years ago there was some interesting research that most of the melatonin we make endogenously gets created in our mitochondria while only a little bit gets created in our pineal gland.
Melatonin is the hormone of light as we create it during the day and then store it for use at night. Melatonin isn’t a sleep pill in as much as a circadian rhythm regulator. That is, in the presence of darkness at night our bodies will release the melatonin we made that day.
If you didn’t watch the sunrise and you spent all day inside not getting sunlight, you didn’t make any melatonin so it will not be released even in the presence of darkness. But if you did create it during the day but you worked on your blue lit computer and lived under LED and fluorescent lights at night, then your body will not release it since it thinks that it’s daytime.
There is a right and a wrong way to take melatonin to make sure that it actually works for you. I wrote an article a while back called, Why doesn’t melatonin work on me? that I’d recommend reading for more information about how to take melatonin correctly.
Melatonin Benefits:
- Helps reset the body’s internal clock
- Non-addictive with fewer side effects compared to prescription sleep aids
- Can promote a faster onset of sleep and longer sleep duration
Ideal For:
- People with insomnia
- Individuals experiencing jet lag
- Night shift workers struggling with sleep pattern disruptions
Magnesium Bisglycinate
Magnesium bisglycinate is a form of magnesium chelated (bound) to do molecules of the amino acid glycine. I like this form best because it means it’s really easy for my body to digest, absorb and assimilate. This means it’s more usable to the body.
We know that magnesium has over 3,751 functions in the body like having proper muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, and the production of proteins, bones, and DNA.
The reason why I love magnesium bisglycinate is because it activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is the “rest and digest” arm of your nervous system. This means that it helps you to relax your muscles and more importantly turn off your brain so you can let go and finally fall asleep.
It also regulates neurotransmitters like GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which helps calm the mind and reduce anxiety. This mineral is powerful because it helps with relaxation, reducing muscle tension, and easing stress, which are all things you need to do to fall asleep.
Magnesium bisglycinate for the sleep win!
Magnesium Bisglycinate Benefits:
- Improves sleep by supporting relaxation and reducing stress
- Supports healthy muscle function, reducing nighttime cramps and restlessness
- Highly bioavailable and less likely to cause digestive discomfort
Ideal For:
- Individuals experiencing anxiety or stress-related sleep difficulties
- People suffering from muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome
- Those with magnesium deficiencies that affect sleep quality
L-Theanine
L-theanine is an amino acid (building block for making protein) that is in certain foods like green tea, black tea and some mushrooms. I like to take it as a powder or capsule in supplement form. Not a big fan of green tea or black tea for reasons I can explain later. What l-theonine seems to do is promote a calming and relaxing feeling to your nervous system that causes you to feel drowsy, or at least me when I take it.
We don’t really know the exact method of action but we do know there are many studies showing it alters brain chemistry in a way that induces drowsiness. Pretty cool eh?
We do however know that L-Theanine increases the levels of certain neurotransmitters, like GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, which help regulate mood, emotions, and sleep. When these neurotransmitters work together they can reduce anxiety (a big one for sleep) and stress allowing you to drift off into dream land more easily.
L-theanine doesn’t help you fall asleep, it helps to create a calm, centered relaxing nervous system so that you you’re more able to fall asleep naturally. It’s also great for regulating brain chemistry and helping to turn off thoughts in your brain. I wrote an article titled, How to turn your brain off that goes into more detail.Â
L-Theanine Benefits:
- Reduces stress and anxiety, promoting a calm mental state
- Enhances the quality of sleep without causing morning grogginess
- Non-habit-forming and works synergistically with other sleep aids like melatonin
Ideal For:
- People experiencing anxiety or stress-related sleep disruptions
- Individuals who want to improve sleep quality without sedation
- Those looking for a natural supplement to relax the mind before bed
Conclusion
As you can see these are just three sleeping tablets online that you can research further for better sleep. I want to reiterate that these sleep supplements aren’t a cure for insomnia. I consider them to be a nice healthy crutch that can help you as you heal the root cause of insomnia, a broken circadian rhythm.
I hope they help you in your journey to better sleep!
