Key Takeaways...
Are you having a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep simply because you’re too hot? I could say light is King  but optimal sleep temperature is queen.
Recently I wrote post about what is the best ac temperature for sleeping.
In that post I talked about how the temperature of the room you sleep in really matters for reaching both deep sleep and REM sleep. In this post I wanted to share my experience with the Chilipad Cube and why I think it’s the best cooling mattress for those of you that sleep really hot, like I do.
Why Sleep Temperature Is So Important
If your body cannot get enough REM sleep, then you’ll notice more anxiety, depression and mood swings. You’ll also notice that you do not have as much drive to do things as you do when you’re well rested. REM sleep seems to regulate mood, our mind and how we process thought.
REM sleep is where we typically have the most dreams. It’s when our body slows down and regulates our breathing and heart rate. It’s also the time when our core body temperature goes down by 1 to 2 degrees Fahrenheit (about 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius).
Are you a negative person? Perhaps you’re not getting enough REM sleep.
Are you depressed or have anxiety? It could mean you’re not getting enough REM sleep.
The possible reason for that could be your body temperature during sleep.
The temperature of our core body greatly affects whether or not we can access REM states of sleep. Many times we may access it but not for as long as we need to because we have to get up to go to the bathroom for example. Our sleep cycle gets interrupted. Or perhaps we don’t get enough REM sleep because our body is too hot.
Each sleep phase should last roughly around 90 minutes. By changing the cutaneous temperature, we can stay in each phase of sleep longer.
Deep sleep (not just REM sleep) is affected by body temperature also!
REM sleep is important but so is deep sleep. Deep sleep is when we build new proteins, repair cells and organs during the night. Deep sleep is when the glymphatic system activates and allows for the removal of heavy metals out of our cerebral spinal fluid. If you don’t get deep sleep you’ll notice it affects your circadian rhythm and you don’t repair as well. You’re also more prone to excess cell growth.
Deep sleep is greatly affected by body temperature.
4 Common Issues with Traditional Mattresses
Regular mattresses tend to trap body heat in and prevent you from slightly lowering body temperature in order to reach those deeper states of sleep. The way I see it, is that there are 4 main issues with traditional sleeping mattresses when it comes to body temperature.
- Lack of Breathable Materials:
- Issue: Traditional mattresses often use dense materials like memory foam or certain types of synthetic fibers. Not healthy.
- Impact: These materials can restrict airflow, causing heat to become trapped and accumulate around the body, leading to increased body temperature during sleep. This is not what you want.
- Heat-Retaining Foam:
- Issue: Many traditional mattresses, especially those made from memory foam, tend to retain heat themselves.
- Impact: Memory foam conforms to the body, creating a snug fit that limits proper air ventilation. The foam absorbs and retains body heat, which can make the sleeping surface feel warm and uncomfortable.
- Limited Airflow Design:
- Issue: The design and construction of some traditional mattresses do not prioritize airflow.
- Impact: Mattresses without proper ventilation channels or breathable layers can cause heat to build up. This lack of airflow can lead to a hotter sleeping environment, contributing to discomfort and disrupted deep sleep and REM states of sleep.
- Insulating Mattress Covers:
- Issue: The covers or protectors used on traditional mattresses are often made from thick, non-breathable materials.
- Impact: These covers can act as an additional barrier that traps heat. Without proper moisture-wicking or cooling properties, the covers prevent heat from dissipating, making the sleeping surface warmer.
These mattresses may be organic and even high quality but it’s how they utilize airflow that can alter how you sleep. Remember, it only take slight changes. One or two degrees (either colder or warmer) can have the potential of waking you up, which prevents you from feeling rested when you wake up.
3 Reasons Why I Love The Chilipad Cube
#1 It Helps Me Sleep Better
I notice a huge difference in my sleep if I have it vs if I don’t put it on. There have been times we have not turned it on before bed on purpose and I woke up feeling less rested and much more groggy. It really is a game changer. I like adding it to my room with an air conditioner but if you can’t have one, this particular cooling mattress is a great alternative. To me it’s the best cooling mattress on the market. We’ve had ours for 7 or 8 years now and couldn’t live without it.
#2 The Chilipad Cube is Quiet
We have the older model, the original Chilipad Cube as it’s called. A few years ago they came out with the Ooler model, which they discontinued and replace it with the Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling System. I think that sounds better than ooler anyway.
They claim that the newest model the Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling System is whisper quiet and much more quiet than the ooler AND our model which is the Chilipad Cube. I’m happy with the little amount of noise that the Chilipad Cube makes. But I do want to upgrade and will be doing so soon.
As of this writing we are in full summertime mode here in Southern California and the nighttime temperature is close to 70 degrees. I know 70 isn’t as hot as the 80s or 90 degree temperatures in the south but still it’s warm enough to definitely trap heat and keep you from getting good rest each night.
#3. The Chilipad Cube Is Easy To Use
I love that it takes only about 10 minutes for me to get it feeling really cool in my bed. Like I mentioned before the Chilipad Cube is quiet, it emits no detectable electromagnetic fields (EMF) and it’s easy to maintain and clean as it’s 100% machine washable. We’ve only had to clean ours a few times. It fits any bed mattress from a queen to a cal king, even split adjustable beds. The temperature range is from 60-115°F / 15.5-46°C.
Who It is Not For?
I will say that both the Chilipad Cube and the Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling Systems are pricey. In this situation, you get what you pay for. I’ll invest any amount of money in getting better sleep. Waking up and feeling full of energy because you slept well is priceless.
The cost is an issue. I’d recommend just saving up for one if it’s not in your current budget. Make it a goal to get either the Cube or the Doc Pro before next summer, whenever you’re reading this.
Other Ways to Cool Your Bedroom
With the warmer temperatures typically comes more condensed air that has water in it. Humidity rises when the sun goes down and it also rises during the Spring and Summer months. Getting a high quality dehumidifier to pull out some of that humidity will make your sleep feel much more cold.
Besides getting a Chilipad Cube or the newest Doc Pro Bed I would add a fan to your bedroom or better yet invest in a Frigidaire conditioner in order to bring the bedroom temperature down to about 65 degrees.
The combination of the Frigidaire conditioner, the dehumidifier and a Chilipad Cube will be a complete game changer for you.

Conclusion
As you can tell I’m a really big fan of our Chilipad Cube. I prioritize my sleep like nothing else. I enjoy lifting weights, building muscle, taking supplements, regulating my light environment but optimizing sleep just feels so good. It moves the needle more than any other health practice you can do. When you sleep good, you feel good. Many times you can’t feel supplements, unless you take something like melatonin but you can feel it if you slept terrible.
If you do anything for your health, prioritize your sleep. You’ll be healthier, have more energy, have more motivation, higher sex drive and generally be much happier. People will enjoy being around you.
One of the many ways I do that is by investing in what I consider to be the best cooling mattress on the market today and that is the Chilipad Cube. When I upgrade one day to the Chilipad Doc Bed Pro Cooling System I’ll write about how that works.
